We aim to provide a high quality maths education – teaching children the essential skills and knowledge to develop an understanding of the world and to create a natural curiosity and love for maths as a subject.
The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all children:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that children have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
At The Pines School we want all children to be able to see mathematics as an interconnected subject and be able to make connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We want our children to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.
At The Pines School, teachers from Year 1 to Year 6 are using detailed Schemes of Learning published by the White Rose Maths Hub to plan effective maths lessons.
Times Table Rockstars
Times Tables Rockstars is a fun and exciting way for children to learn their times tables. As a school we subscribe for this for all children in Years 2 to 6. Children can access this in school and at home. If your child does not have a log on for this – please let us know.
When it comes to times tables, speed and accuracy are important – the more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations.
Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help students master the times tables!
To be a Times Table Rock Star you need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12×12 in less than 3 seconds!
